CHANGING WEATHER, INCREASING RISK

Solar installations once believed to be safe from the incredibly destructive power of flooding are now at risk due to increasingly wilder, more violent weather, including hurricanes and tropical storms. 

There were 30 named storms in 2020, the most active hurricane season on record. One storm alone caused nearly $20 billion in damage across the Gulf Coast, flooding vast inland regions with a 10-foot storm surge. Further away from the coasts, increasingly severe weather is also causing rivers to overflow their banks and inundate low-lying areas for hundreds of miles. Flood plains and risk zones are changing every year.

 

The impact of these kinds of storms, increasingly common, on solar farms is devastating. In the best case scenarios, flooding may only result in minor interruption from soiling. However, if the flooding is severe enough it has the potential to create lethal hazards that can remain present even after flood waters have receded. And salt water, where flooding comes from gulf and ocean storms, can quickly ruin every mechanical component, every module, and every piece of electrical equipment.
